Contemporary extension reawakens this family home in an extraordinary setting
An existing, tired conservatory completely blocked the remarkable elevated views of this property’s extensive garden in Puttenham, Surrey. A replacement structure was designed to incorporate the kitchen and dining spaces, with a large structural glass opening framing the panoramic views of the tree canopy and sky line. In this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with planning restrictions on footprint and height, the extension is dressed in naturally finished vertical timber cladding to reflect the surrounding woodland, and contrast with the traditional red brick of the original Victorian house.
The proposals also included a full refurbishment of the house which focused on improving the internal layouts and circulation. Re-configuring the stair and adding a dormer window created a master bedroom suite in the roof space, including dressing room and en-suite shower room. Returning to this property some years after its development we were thrilled to see how well the spaces have worked for this family over time.
